Jul. 11th, 2003 07:05 pmI've been pretty busy the last few days. My mom was down in Phoenix on vacation, so I went out with her a bit and mooched off her as much as I could ;-)
On Monday she landed. Her and her boyfriend Mark rented a car and drove to their hotel, which is about a mile from here next to the Metrocenter Mall. At about 11, she called and said she would be relaxing by the pool while Mark slept, they had both been up since 3AM for the flight. I took the bus down to the hotel and talked with my mom a bit. After a while, we both got hungry so we went to get Mark. He was still tired, so we went to lunch without him. Went to Ruby Tuesdays inside the mall, good food, big servings. I didn't even finish my Colossal Burger. We walked back to the hotel and Mark was up and ready to go.
We went to a Diamondbacks game, making a stop at the Hooters downtown first ;-) The game was pretty good, Diamondbacks creamed them. We left around the 8th inning, my mom was starting to feel sick and the D-backs were winning 14 to 6 anyway. I decided to stay the night at their hotel, that would give us more time to get ready for Mexico.
Tuesday was Mexico. We drove down to a city called Nogales, which is right on the border. It's about a 3 hour drive. We found a parking lot to park in and walked across the border. Haggled a bit with the locals, got some souvenir stuff, nothing to exciting. It was fun though, I had never been to Mexico, my first out of US trip. Afterwards we drove back to Phoenix and this time I stayed at my apartment, that way Josh and I could get ready for Las Vegas easier.
Wednesday and Thursday was Las Vegas. It's a pretty long drive up there, 5 hours the way Mark drives, Josh probably could have gotton us there in 3. Not too many sites along the way, mostly empty desert. Drove across the Hoover Dam. We stayed at the Circus Circus. Found our rooms and went and had a buffet. Walked around the Hotel a bit, then went outside to walk the Strip.
Josh and I ditched the parents ... they were slowing us down :-p We walked down the strip, looking into hotels and such. The Venetian is very cool. When we got to the Flamingo, we saw that the Amazing Johnathan was performing at 10. It was 9:30, so Josh and I got tickets. For those that don't know, The Amazing Johnathan is a comedian/magician mix. Very funny. We had seen him before on comedy central.
During his performance, he gave us a great idea. Take a video camera and put it over your toilet, let it record for about 10 minutes. Then, at a party, when someone goes into the bathroom, turn on the toilet video and have everyone start laughing. When the person in the bathroom comes out, wanting to know what is so funny, he'll be pleasantly surprised by what he sees on the tv.
After the Johnathan Show, we walked the rest of the strip. All very cool stuff. Josh and I agree that the Luxor is the best though. That's as far as we walked down. The distance from Circus Circus to the Luxor is three miles. We walked there and back. Counting the walking we did inside the hotels, we figured we walked between eight and ten miles that night.
On the way back to the Circus Circus, Josh and I stopped to get a pizza. We were hoping the hot tub would be open, we were both pretty sore from all the walking, but it closed way earlier. So we just went back to the room and crashed.
Thursday we woke up, got our stuff ready and headed out. We took a little bit different route coming back, this time going through Laughlin. It's sorta like Vegas, only not as big or dirty and quite a bit cheaper. We had a lunch buffet at the Colorado Belle.
Made our way back to Phoenix, almost got hit by an orange semi trying to pass another semi. Other than that, a pretty uneventful drive.
Had Mom and Mark drive us off at our apartment. Aina called, so we decided to go see Pirates of the Caribbean before she left. She told us that her aunt was freaking out cause she was always out with 20 year old guys. It was a pretty good movie. We dropped Aina off at her place, said our good-byes to her and went home. She had a bus Friday at 9.
Was lazy most of the day. Went out to lunch with my mom before she went to the airport. Said my good-byes to her and went back to the apartment. Chatted some, went to the pool and hot tub. Am still a bit sore after all the walking in Vegas.
All in all, a very good time. I apologize for the long read :p
