Website Crash
Mar. 20th, 2003 08:29 pmMy website went down today. Well, the whole server did.
At about 8:30 this morning, I had just gotton out of the shower and saw that a Yahoo Message appeared on the screen. Someone said that the MUD I run was down. I couldn't get into the shell account to reboot it, so I checked out the website for the server.
Apparently, the hard drive was bad on the server and they had to change it out.
This had been posted for about 2 days (with delays on when the hard drive would be replaced). But I don't check the site very often to look for maintenance.
They said they were going to ghost the hard drive, that way, no data would be lost.
About 2 hours later, we got word the ghost had failed and they would have to use a backup. Data loss.
The webserver finally came up at about 4PM. 7 1/2 hours of down time. The server admin had to change a bunch of settings to get everything working again. Was finally able to restart the MUD at about 6:30.
I went to see when the last backup was. 5:30AM ... Wednesday. So the MUD lost over 24 hours worth of stuff, including the players who started between then and any other improvements to people's characters. There's no way I can reimburse them, I don't have the proper logs to see it :(
So far, 6 or 7 people have logged on and heard the news. Though they were a bit upset and angry, none of them seemed to be taking it to hard, which is a good thing I suppose. I'd hate to lose all my players because of this incident. Some of the changes I had made to the code were also gone. I can remember a few things I did, but not everything.
Hopefully things will go back to running smoother.
