Machinima - Ma-sheen-EH-ma - Machinima is a form of filmmaking that uses computer game technology to shoot films in the virtual reality using a game engine.
About the most popular machinima series out there is one called Red vs Blue, they use the video game “Halo” to make their videos. They come out with a new video pretty much weekly, it follows a cohesive storyline and is overall pretty damn funny. Anyone can go on there and download the videos, although if you donate $10 to them, you become a "Sponsor." You get some added benefits, including being able to see the videos in a higher resolution that non-Sponsors and getting the videos a few days early. Anyway, since I liked the videos so much I decided to give them $10. I talked with other people who were Sponsors, and one of the things we always disliked was Freeloaders. These were people who would try and get the videos early and at a higher resolution without paying for them. So a few of us got together and decided to make our own video, its plot being the struggle of Sponsors vs Freeloaders.
Since then, we’ve released 7 episodes, 2 PSAs (Public Service Announcements) and a bunch of other videos here and there about "how we did it" and "when things went wrong." It’s all been a lot of fun. We’re not getting paid for it, in fact, if we tried to get paid for it, Bungie (the people who make the game Halo) would probably have issues with it. They’ve allowed Red vs Blue to profit from it, but they’ve been the only exception.
It’s been a lot of fun, I’ve done everything from voicing (I play a pirate, arrrr), to filming/directing/editing the videos together.
So anyway, if one day you’re bored and have nothing better to do, stop by the site above and go to the Downloads section and check out the videos. Keep in mind that they’re really big files (from 10MB to over 100MB) so if you’re on dial up, you may be SOL.
Episodes 1 - 4 are more comedy videos, similar to what Red vs Blue does. After that, we decided to try a dramatic series, so starting with Episode 5, we started the “Flame War” series which relies more on drama than comedy, something not often done in machinima.
