San Jose

San Jose has been pretty fun so far. Right now I'm in a "business center" at the hotel as I haven't been able to get my laptop online.

The flight was an hour late, bleh. The San Jose airport sucks. Rather than unloading on a jetway, we had to walk across the tarmac. Then we had to stand in a big ass line to get onto a bus that took us over to where the rental cars were.

But this is where things start to get better and I start really loving my job. We get to Avis, the car rental place. There's a board on the outside with names and parking space numbers. My traveling buddy (we'll refer to him as 'J') looks at the board, finds his name, and we walk out to the parking lot. There's a Ford Expedition sitting in a spot with a guy watching it. We walk up, he hands us the key, and we drive off. No waiting in line or talking to someone at the desk. The other guy who will be helping us with the install (hereafter known as 'G') arrived on a different flight, but he got a Chevy Trailblazer. So we have two big ass SUVs between the three of us.

We get to the hotel. Keep in mind I'm pretty much used to staying at Motel 6s. This time, it's the Residence Inn. I was able to get a Penthouse. The hotel room is bigger than my new apartment. It has a full size kitchen, a front room with a fireplace, a den area, a bathroom. And that's the downstairs. Upstairs is the bedroom and another bathroom. Also, downstairs had one of those beds that folds out from the wall and the couch also folds out to a bed. Did I mention that I get this room to myself? And that the company pays for it?

So anyway, I left Phoenix Monday evening. We all settled in and crashed for the night. In the morning we went to GE (the place where we are installing) and did an inventory on all the parts to make sure nothing was missing. That was all we really did today, as anything else would take quite a while longer.

So J and I decided to head up to San Francisco. G stayed back at the hotel, he's from Austin as has been flying a lot the last week. So we drove up to SF, over the Golden Gate Bridge, got ourselves lost a few times, checked out that place, laughed at all the weird people. Had fun. I was a complete moron and left my camera at the hotel. We may go back on Friday if we have time, I dunno.

I took some pics of the hotel room as well as my tool box. This is my first real tool box and the thing is friggin huge. With all the tools it probably weighs 75lbs (34kg). Haven't been able to get the pictures onto a computer though, the computers in the business center don't appear to have the USB slots enabled. I stuck in my card reader and nothing happened. I can probably borrow one of the guys' laptops tomorrow and get them off.

So yeah, all in all it's been pretty fun. The hard work will start tomorrow though. But once this job is done, I'm probably looking at downtime until late July. Fun stuff.

Oh man! I need to stop working for universities. They never get me fancy rooms like that. And I have to get my own damn toolbox with my own damn tools.

Life's just not fair :-p

I'm glad you're having fun :-D
